“Any attempt to describe myself would end in awkwardness, confusion and contradiction” but I will try
I was born in Hong Kong, which I think of as one of the most interesting places in the world.
I was given a Rolleicord twin lens reflex by my father when I was 12. He used to enter his photos for salons. I fell in love with photography since. I was given a Bronica SQAi when I was 30, also by my father. I now use a Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 and have recently acquired a Nikon F4S film camera in mint condition. Alas, photography is not about the equipment but a way of seeing the world around you. I had wanted to become a war photographer but that dream would have been too radical to pull off.
There is a family legend that my father sold his Leica to marry my mother. I gave him a Leica MP for his 80th birthday to thank him for all that he has given me, his patience, and his unique way of seeing the world. In return he gave me a Leica Monochrom which I am now using to take most of the black and white photos here. I made a photo book with photos of my parents before they got married, up to the day I was born in ’62. So book 2 is still to come, when I am less busy. I am still working out how to make the best portrait of my parents.
I live in London. I am an architect with international clients so I travel extensively for work.
Enjoy my blog and ask any questions you like and I am hoping also to make some friends who love food, photography and most of all, life itself.
